Original diagnostic systems such as BMW ICOM or VAS6154/ODIS deliver the diagnostic power – but without the right notebook or tablet, nothing works in the workshop. Many customers ask us which hardware is suitable for professional use with these systems. Here are the most important answers.
Why hardware plays such a big role with original diagnostic systems
Original manufacturer software such as ISTA (BMW) or ODIS (VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT) often places higher demands on RAM and processing power than simple OBD2 scanner apps. In addition, interfaces such as the BMW ICOM Next A or the VAS6154 must be reliably connected via USB – not every notebook offers the right, stable ports for this.
Complete system or your own notebook?
With many of our original diagnostic devices, you have a choice: either a complete system with an already preconfigured notebook (for example, the BMW ICOM Next A with a Panasonic Toughbook), or the interface only for anyone who already has their own diagnostic notebook with a licence installed. Complete systems are ready to use right away, while the interface-only variant is somewhat cheaper if suitable hardware is already available.
Features the notebook should have
- Stable USB ports for a permanent connection to the diagnostic interface
- Sufficient RAM (at least 8 GB) for smooth operation with diagnostic software
- Robust casing, if the device is used regularly directly on the vehicle or in a service vehicle
- Windows operating system, since most original diagnostic programs only run under Windows
Our recommendation
For BMW vehicles you'll find suitable original diagnostic devices in the Original Diagnostic Devices BMW category, and for the VAG group (VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT) in the Original Diagnostic Devices VAG category. If you're instead looking for a standalone, rugged notebook for existing diagnostic software, you'll find what you need in our Rugged Laptop and Tablet category – including devices from Panasonic Toughbook and Getac.
