Special cables for Tesla and BMW: when OBD2 alone is not enough
The 16-pin OBD2 socket is standard on most cars. However, workshops are encountering two important exceptions more and more often: Tesla fits manufacturer-specific diagnostic connectors to many vehicles, and BMW uses Ethernet on its F and G models for fast communication with the control units. Many Tesla vehicles have no classic OBD2 socket. Instead, a manufacturer-specific interface is used:

Important: An adapter cable is not a diagnostic tool. It only provides the mechanical and electrical connection between the vehicle and the diagnostic tool. Which control units and functions you can reach always depends on the diagnostic tool used, its software and the manufacturer, model and model year of the vehicle.

- Tesla: Count the contacts on the diagnostic connector – 26 (Model 3) or 12 (Model S/X)?
- BMW: Is it an F or G model, and does your diagnostic tool support Ethernet diagnostics?
- Diagnostic tool: Can your device actually communicate with the vehicle's control units? The cable only provides the connection.
