Workshop Diagnostics Starter Kit: What You Get for 1.000, 2.500 and 5.000 €

Autel MaxiSys MS909 Diagnosetablet mit MaxiFlash VCI für freie Werkstätten

Auto Diagnostik |

How much diagnostics does a workshop get for its budget?

The short answer: even for under 1.000 € you get fully fledged control-unit diagnostics with coding and service functions – for example the MaxiDAS DS900 at 999 €. From around 2.000 € a TPMS radio module and battery service are added, and from about 4.700 € you work with an MS909 EU version at OE level including ECU programming via J2534. The key is knowing the gaps of each tier before you buy. All prices in this article (as of October 2026, incl. VAT).

Tier 1: up to 1.000 € – the solid foundation

In this class you already get real workshop diagnostics instead of a simple fault-code reader: all supported control units, live data, actuator tests, coding and adaptations, plus the common service functions from DPF regeneration to battery registration.

The Autel MaxiDAS DS900 (999 €) works wired via the OBD2 cable, runs on Android 11 and includes 2 years of software updates. The MaxiCom MK906 Pro (989 €), by contrast, connects wirelessly via the MaxiVCI V200 Bluetooth interface and has the stronger hardware (octa-core, 128 GB SSD, 1920 × 1200) – with 1 year of updates included. Rule of thumb: if you want to work longer without renewing a licence, take the DS900; if you want to move freely around the vehicle, the MK906 Pro.

What's missing at this tier: a TPMS radio module (reading and programming wheel sensors is not possible, only TPMS relearn via OBD), OE-level ECU programming and ADAS calibration. For purely mechanical businesses without tyre service that is bearable – for the tyre business it is not.

Tier 2: up to 2.500 € – diagnostics plus TPMS and battery service

With the second budget you close the entry class's most important gap: tyre service. The MaxiSys MS906 Pro-TS (1.469 €, international version) brings the complete TPMS module – read sensors, relearn them and program Autel MX sensors. The MaxiBAS BT608 battery tester (579 €) is the perfect companion: it tests 6 and 12 volt batteries including alternator and starter, handles battery registration after a replacement and prints test reports right at the vehicle. Together, at around 2.048 €, both stay clearly under the budget limit.

Alternative for heavy users: the MaxiSys MS906 Max (2.519 €) sits just above the 2.500 € mark but offers the 10.1-inch display and 2 years of updates – without a TPMS radio module, though. What's missing at this tier: still ECU programming via J2534 as well as access to secure-gateway vehicles (on the international version).

Tier 3: up to 5.000 € – OE level with programming

Here you move up to the top class: the Autel MaxiSys MS909 works with the MaxiFlash VCI, which supports the PassThru standards J2534, D-PDU and RP1210 – enabling manufacturer-level work such as online programming and coding of BMW vehicles or SCN coding on Mercedes (manufacturer access required). The EU version (4.719 €) includes 2 years of updates, is ADAS-capable via an optional upgrade and allows activation of the EU SGW package for protected control units.

If you would rather equip broadly, combine the international version of the MS909 (2.519 €) with the TPMS specialist MaxiTPMS ITS600 (519 €) and the BT608 battery tester – around 3.617 € in total, i.e. three workstations for less than the budget. As a flagship just above the limit, the MaxiSys MS909 S2 (5.409 €) deserves a mention: a new device generation with Android 13, an 11-inch display and 2 years of the EU SGW package included.

The three tiers at a glance

Budget Recommendation What you get What is still missing
up to 1.000 € DS900 (999 €) or MK906 Pro (989 €) Full diagnostics, coding, service functions TPMS radio module, ECU programming, ADAS
up to 2.500 € MS906 Pro-TS + BT608 (approx. 2.048 € together) plus: complete TPMS and battery service ECU programming (J2534), SGW access
up to 5.000 € MS909 EU version (4.719 €) or MS909 + ITS600 + BT608 (approx. 3.617 €) OE level, J2534 PassThru, topology view ADAS calibration only via optional upgrade

An honest assessment: who should plan differently?

Not every workshop is well served by this ladder. Businesses with a mixed fleet of cars, vans and trucks do better with a car/truck combination system than with car-only tablets – more on this in our article on truck diagnostic tools. And anyone who services almost exclusively one VW Group brand should consider an original system such as VAS6154 with ODIS instead of the multi-brand ladder. The reverse also applies: a hobby mechanic with two vehicles of his own does not need the 5.000 € tier – even the entry class is oversized there.

Frequently asked questions

Is a device under 1.000 € enough for an independent workshop?

For mechanics, servicing and electrical troubleshooting on common brands: yes. The limits are tyre service (no TPMS radio module) and manufacturer-level programming.

Better one expensive device or several affordable ones?

With two to three specialised devices (diagnostics, TPMS, battery) several employees work in parallel – the bundle of MS909, ITS600 and BT608 costs less than one flagship. A single top-class device pays off when programming and SGW access are the priority.

What does the update period mean for your calculation?

After it expires, each of the devices mentioned keeps working without restriction on the last software version; new vehicle models come via an optional 12-month licence. Our guide on updates and follow-up costs explains the details.

Do I also need repair data such as Autodata?

For adjustment values, wiring diagrams and labour times a database makes sense, but it is a separate subscription. Many systems include a 30-day demo version for testing.

Are the prices quoted valid permanently?

All prices are promotional prices as of October 2026 including VAT – the current price on the product page is always decisive.

Conclusion

For 1.000 € you get full diagnostics, for 2.500 € TPMS and battery service are added, for 5.000 € you work at OE level with programming – or equip three workstations at once. Purchase on invoice is possible via Klarna or PayPal. If you would like to talk through your budget tier: 0711-3654 4645.
