Secure Gateway (SGW): why your diagnostic tool is suddenly blocked
Many independent workshops know the situation: the diagnostic tool connects and reads the vehicle – but when clearing fault codes, resetting the service or running an actuator test, an error message appears. The reason is almost always the Secure Gateway (SGW). Here you will learn what lies behind it, which manufacturers use it and how to unlock your Autel diagnostic tool for it.
What is the Secure Gateway?
The Security Gateway is a security component in modern vehicles. It controls all access to the vehicle network and above all blocks write access by diagnostic tools until authentication has taken place. Without this authentication, many jobs are blocked on the affected vehicles:
- Clearing fault codes
- Service resets
- Actuator tests
- ECU programming and coding
Manufacturers introduced the SGW step by step: the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group (FCA, now Stellantis) has fitted it to some models since 2018, and since 2020 the VW Group has encrypted the diagnostic interface on some models with the SFD system (vehicle diagnostics protection). Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Renault also use their own secure gateway systems.

Whether a particular vehicle has an active Secure Gateway depends on the model and model year – not every vehicle of the brands listed is affected.
The three ways to unlock
1. Autel SGW package EU – all major manufacturers in one package
The package for workshops that work on many brands: VW Group, Stellantis (FCA/PSA), Mercedes-Benz and Nissan, each with 1 year of unlimited unlocks plus 10 unlocks for Renault/Dacia. Authentication is then carried out directly from the diagnostic tool. Unused Renault tokens expire after one year.
2. Autel VW SFD annual licence – for VW specialists
Unlocks diagnostic access to SFD-protected models from Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, Seat, Cupra, Lamborghini and Bentley for 12 months. Please note: activation by the manufacturer can take up to 14 working days.
3. Autel FCA/Stellantis annual licence – for Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot, Opel & more
The unlock is provided in direct cooperation with Stellantis and is valid for 12 months – for the FCA brands as well as for Citroën, DS, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall. Activation can take a few working days.
Requirements – please check before you buy
- Valid update licence: The SGW unlock requires an active software update licence on your Autel device. Expired? Our licence overview shows the right renewal.
- Official EU device: Autel devices from authorised EU retail distribution can be unlocked. Devices bought through online channels such as eBay or Amazon cannot be unlocked.
- Supported series (SGW package and VW SFD): MaxiCheck MX900, MaxiDAS DS900, MaxiSys MS906 Pro, MS909, MS919 and MS Ultra (incl. S2).
Important: The SGW unlock is not mandatory. Your diagnostic tool remains fully functional without it – it is only needed if you want to carry out unrestricted diagnostics and service functions on vehicles with an active Secure Gateway.
Good to know: Licences are digital goods. The unlock is set up for your serial number immediately after purchase – which is why they are excluded from the right of withdrawal. If in doubt, give us your model and serial number beforehand and we will check the match before you order.
