There are three form factors for vehicle diagnostics: the Android diagnostic tablet (e.g. Autel MaxiDAS DS900) as a closed all-in-one device, the Windows system on a Toughbook base with diagnostic software, and the rugged tablet as an open platform for your own software. The rule of thumb: if you want fast multi-brand diagnostics with guided operation, the Android tablet is your best bet. If you use manufacturer systems such as ODIS or BMW ISTA, or need several programs running in parallel, there is no way around Windows. The details decide – let’s go through them.
Form factor 1: Android diagnostic tablet – ready to go quickly, guided operation
Devices like the Autel MaxiDAS DS900 are tailored to exactly one task from the moment you switch them on: ECU diagnostics across many brands. The DS900 comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android 11 and modern protocols such as DoIP and CAN FD, reads and clears fault codes, shows live data and masters coding, adaptations and actuator tests for over 100 brands. Features like AutoVIN (vehicle identification via the VIN) and AutoScan take a lot of searching off the user’s hands – even staff without diagnostic experience find their way around quickly.
The strengths: compact format right at the vehicle, short start-up time, guided menus, updates arrive via Wi-Fi directly from the manufacturer. The limits: you work inside the manufacturer’s closed system. Manufacturer software such as ODIS or ISTA will not run on it, and once the update period expires (the DS900 includes 2 years), the extension costs extra – the device does, however, keep working without restriction on the existing software version.
Autel MaxiDAS DS900 – 999 € instead of 1.299 € (as of: October 2026)
Form factor 2: Windows Toughbook with diagnostic software – flexible and expandable
The second variant combines a rugged Windows notebook or tablet (Panasonic Toughbook, Getac, Dell Rugged) with a diagnostic solution. Example: the Vident iSmart system on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-D1 for €1,399 (as of: October 2026) – multi-brand diagnostics for over 110 manufacturers with a Bluetooth multiplexer, 3 years of free updates and 30 days of Autodata trial access.
The decisive point: original manufacturer systems require Windows. VAS6154 with ODIS for the VAG world or BMW ICOM Next A with ISTA run exclusively on a Windows machine. If you use such systems or plan to add them later, a Toughbook gives you the right foundation from the start. On top of that: the same device runs repair databases, parts catalogues, e-mail and office software in parallel – the diagnostic device becomes a fully-fledged workshop workstation that can also be used at the desk via a docking station.
To be honest: getting started is less guided than with the Android tablet. Windows systems need maintenance, and the combination of computer, interface and software takes more explaining at the beginning.

Form factor 3: rugged tablet as an open base for your own software
If you already own diagnostic software or licences, you don’t need a complete system, just the right hardware. Rugged tablets such as the Panasonic Toughbook CF-D1 (13.3 inches, resistive touchscreen – can be operated with gloves) or the more compact Toughpad FZ-G1 (10.1 inches) are the classics for this: IP65-protected, drop-resistant, ready to use immediately with Windows 11 Pro. You will find all models and configurations in our category Panasonic Toughbook & Toughpad.
The five decision criteria at a glance
- Software ecosystem: Autel world with guided functions = Android tablet. ODIS, ISTA, CNH EST, Scania or your own software = Windows Toughbook.
- Manufacturer systems planned? If so, there is no way around Windows – better to buy the right base straight away than to pay twice later.
- Several workstations: A Toughbook can be moved between reception, workshop floor and office via a docking station; the Android tablet remains a pure diagnostic device.
- Operation at the vehicle: With gloves, resistive touchscreens (CF-D1) and devices with stylus input score points; compact tablets are handier in the engine bay than 14-inch notebooks.
- Budget and follow-up costs: Android tablets start cheaper but come with update subscriptions. Windows systems cost more, but the hardware can be reused for new software for years.
Who each solution is not suitable for
The Android tablet is the wrong choice if you use manufacturer software or want to use the device as an office workstation as well. The complete Windows system isn’t worthwhile if fault memories are only read occasionally and nobody on the team wants to maintain a Windows machine. And the bare rugged tablet only helps those who already own software and interface – on its own it diagnoses nothing at all. Frequently asked questions
Can I use ODIS or ISTA on an Android tablet?
No. The original manufacturer systems from VW/Audi (ODIS) and BMW (ISTA) run exclusively on Windows. For these you need a Windows notebook or tablet plus the matching original interface.
Is an Android diagnostic tablet worthless once the updates expire?
No. The most recently installed software version remains fully usable. New vehicle models and functions simply stop being added until an update licence is purchased.
Can a Toughbook be operated with gloves?
Yes, depending on the model: the resistive touchscreen of the CF-D1 also responds to gloves and styluses; on the FZ-G1 and FZ-G2 the included stylus takes over.
Which form factor is right for field service?
For mobile diagnostics at the customer’s site, compact rugged tablets (FZ-G1, CF-D1) or an Android tablet are more practical than a 14-inch notebook – but the deciding factor remains the software you need on the road.
Are the systems also available with other Toughbook models?
Yes. Most complete diagnostic systems in our shop are optionally available with CF-D1, FZ-G1, CF-53, CF-54 or Getac S410 – just get in touch.
